The book presents five chapters related to the ecology of avian diseases, the recently emerged branch of avian ecology, veterinary medicine, human medicine virology and parasitology. It is, therefore, a multidisciplinary book. It advances studies on the ecology of avian epizootic diseases. Two case studies are presented: one from Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the other from Tibet in China. Both studies focus on relationships between birds, humans, microbiota and environment. The avian influenza is the main object of this study. It is a viral disease mainly affecting waterbirds, but it has been transmitted to humans in recent years and has caused serious health problems. The book shows how the disease emerged from its original site in the lake in Tibet and how it spread worldwide. The study from Kinshasa focuses on the Malachite Kingfisher and a few other bird species. This is a good example of a holistic approach to the problems linked to avian diseases, the ecology of birds (site fidelity, timing of breeding, breeding success, diet), microbiota, parasites and human health. The study also turns attention to birds as good indicators of environmental quality. A separate chapter deals with these aspects of hematology, which are relevant to avian diseases. Special attention is paid to factors influencing fluctuations in hematocrit levels of birds in relation to their age, sex, season of the year, physiological indices (metabolism, energetics), breeding status, parasites, season of the year, and altitude of inhabited area. Blood elements such as erythrocytes, granulocytes (heterophils, granulocytes, eosinophils and basophils), and agranulocytes (monocytes, lymphocytes, thrombocytes) are compared between 14 selected bird species from different parts of the world. These parameters are essential for health monitoring (critical early warning markers of stress, disease, and malnourishment in bird populations). This book targets a broad audience of ecologists, ornithologists, students of zoonotic diseases, and researchers in veterinary and human medicine.

As we adopt a One Health philosophy to how we view the welfare of animals, specifically those housed in zoos and used in farming or production, our global views have undergone a significant change. Zoos have shifted their prime focus from entertainment to conservation of species, educating the public, and working to improve upon the animals’ welfare. Animal production farms, particularly in developing countries, can be large operations producing sustainable protein products for a nation, or may be backyard farms supporting local families; both provide sources of income and feed a continuously increasing human population. However, these forms of farming may complicate or even disregard aspects of animal welfare, biosecurity, and our ecological footprint. Issues related to sustaining the human population while providing for zoo and production animals are multifaceted and often at odds, hence a worldwide shift in our mindset has become imperative. Integrating the One Health initiative into food production has been a great first step. In this book, we explore these varied facets as we contemplate a quest for animal welfare, from zoo to farm.

Consciousness is the most fascinating—but tantalizingly difficult—topic in the whole of biology. This open access book sets out to explain the reasons for the gap between “knowing” and “doing” in view of self-reliance, which is more and more often expected of citizens. In today’s society, people are expected to take responsibility for their own lives and be self-reliant. This is no easy feat. They must be on constant high alert in areas of life such as health, work and personal finances and, if things threaten to go awry, take appropriate action without further ado. What does this mean for public policy? Policymakers tend to assume that the government only needs to provide people with clear information and that, once properly informed, they will automatically do the right thing. However, it is becoming increasingly obvious that things do not work like that. Even though people know perfectly well what they ought to do, they often behave differently. Why is this? This book sets out to explain the reasons for the gap between ‘knowing’ and ‘doing’. It focuses on the role of non-cognitive capacities, such as setting goals, taking action, persevering and coping with setbacks, and shows how these capacities are undermined by adverse circumstances. By taking the latest psychological insights fully into account, this book presents a more realist perspective on self-reliance, and shows government officials how to design rules and institutions that allow for the natural limitations in people’s ‘capacity to act’.
